| Dethiosulfovibrio| Dethiosulfovibrio Magot et al. 1997
Sulfate reduction: Dethiosulfovibrio species are sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that play important roles in anaerobic microbial communities. They are capable of utilizing sulfate as a terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration, reducing it to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This process is important for sulfur cycling in natural environments but can also have implications for human health and industrial processes.
Sulfide production: The production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by sulfate-reducing bacteria like Dethiosulfovibrio can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on human health. In low concentrations, H2S acts as a signaling molecule with potential cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects. However, in high concentrations, H2S is toxic and can cause adverse health effects such as respiratory irritation, nausea, headache, and even death in extreme cases.
Disease associations: While Dethiosulfovibrio species are not typically considered pathogenic to humans, sulfate-reducing bacteria, in general, have been implicated in various disease conditions. In particular, they have been associated with infections in wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, and chronic rhinosinusitis. These infections are often polymicrobial in nature, involving complex interactions between sulfate-reducing bacteria and other microorganisms in biofilms.
Environmental health: In addition to their potential impacts on human health, sulfate-reducing bacteria like Dethiosulfovibrio can also influence environmental health. They play roles in sulfur cycling, anaerobic digestion, and bioremediation of sulfur-containing compounds in contaminated environments. Understanding the ecology and physiology of sulfate-reducing bacteria is important for managing environmental pollution and promoting ecosystem health.

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
